Dua for Understanding and Acting Upon Prophetic Medicine

Knowledge & Learning
Hasan HadithSunan Ibn Majah 122

اللَّهُمَّ عَلِّمْنِي الْكِتَابَ وَالْحِكْمَةَ وَافْقَهْنِي فِي الدِّينِ

O Allah, teach me the Book and wisdom, and make me understand the religion.

Allahumma 'allimni al-kitaba wal-hikmata wafqahni fid-deen

When to Read

This dua is particularly relevant when starting to learn about Islamic rulings, Quranic interpretation, or, in this context, delving into the teachings of the Prophet ﷺ regarding health and well-being, often referred to as 'Prophetic Medicine'. Recite it at the beginning of your study sessions or whenever you seek a deeper grasp of Islamic knowledge, including its practical applications for maintaining health.

How to Read

Raise your hands in supplication, as was the practice of the Prophet ﷺ. Face the Qiblah if possible, and recite with sincerity and a focused heart. Understand that this is a request directly from Allah, seeking His divine guidance and understanding. After reciting, make a conscious effort to seek out authentic sources for Prophetic Medicine and apply what you learn with conviction.

Virtues & Benefits

This powerful dua, taught by the Prophet ﷺ to his beloved companion Abdullah ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), is a comprehensive plea for understanding the Quran (al-kitab) and the Sunnah (al-hikmah). It's not just about acquiring knowledge, but about gaining true comprehension ('wafqahni') that leads to correct practice. By asking Allah to grant understanding of the religion, we are asking for the ability to correctly interpret and implement all aspects of Islam, including the practical guidance on health found in the Sunnah, which is a vital part of our deen.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said to Ibn Abbas, 'O son of my uncle, indeed I will teach you some words. Protect Allah, and Allah will protect you. Protect Allah, and you will find Him before you. When you ask, ask Allah. When you seek help, seek help from Allah. Know that if the creation were to unite to benefit you with something, they could not benefit you except with something that Allah had already decreed for you. And if they were to unite to harm you with something, they could not harm you except with something that Allah had already decreed for you. The pens have been lifted, and the pages have dried. And know that what was meant for you will reach you, and what was meant for you will not reach you.' Then Ibn Abbas said: 'O Messenger of Allah, I will say this: O Allah, teach me the Book and wisdom, and make me understand the religion.' He said: 'Yes, O son of my uncle. I shall certainly teach you the words of knowledge.' He said: 'O Allah, teach me the Book and wisdom, and make me understand the religion.'
