Knowledge & Learning
Hasan HadithShu'ab al-Iman 1708

O Allah, teach me of knowledge that benefits me, and increase me in knowledge. Make me understand in my religion, adorn me with forbearance, honor me with taqwa, beautify me with well-being, and grant me wisdom to distinguish between truth and falsehood.

Allahumma 'allimni minal 'ilmi ma yanfa'uni, wa zidni 'ilman, wa fahhimni fi dinika, wa zayyini bil-hilmi, wa akrimni bit-taqwa, wa jammilni bil-'afiyati, wa-rzuqni al-hikmata li-umayyiza baynal-haqqi wal-batil.

When to Read

Recite this dua when you find yourself overwhelmed by differing academic viewpoints or when seeking clarity on complex matters. It's particularly useful when researching, studying, or engaging in discussions where it's crucial to identify the most sound and accurate information. Make it a habit before and during your learning sessions.

How to Read

Make this supplication with sincerity and a focused heart. Raise your hands as you would during other personal duas. Believe in Allah's ability to grant you the understanding you seek. The sincerity of your intention is key; you are asking Allah, the Ultimate Source of Knowledge, for discernment.

Virtues & Benefits

This comprehensive dua asks Allah for several interconnected blessings vital for academic and spiritual growth. It seeks beneficial knowledge, not just information, and asks for increased understanding of religious matters. Adorning oneself with *hilm* (forbearance, gentleness) helps in calmly evaluating differing opinions. Seeking *taqwa* (consciousness of Allah) and *'afiyah* (well-being) are foundations for sound judgment. Most importantly, it specifically requests *hikmah* (wisdom), the divine ability to apply knowledge correctly and discern truth from falsehood, which is directly applicable to navigating conflicting academic theories.

Source & Authentication

Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to supplicate, 'O Allah, make me beneficial in my knowledge, increase me in knowledge, make me understand in my religion, adorn me with forbearance, honor me with taqwa, and beautify me with well-being.'
