اللَّهُمَّ عَلِّمْنِي الْكِتَابَ وَالْحِسَابَ وَفِقْهَ الدِّينِ
O Allah, teach me the Book (the Quran), and the calculation (understanding of practical matters/inheritance), and the understanding of the religion.
Allahumma 'allimni al-kitaba wal-hisaba wa fiqh ad-din
When to Read
This is a profound supplication to be recited at any time, but it is particularly potent when beginning a new study session, embarking on the path of seeking knowledge, or when feeling overwhelmed by complex legal questions. Make it a habit before and after your lessons, or simply as part of your daily supplications.
How to Read
Recite this dua with sincere intention and a focused heart. Imagine yourself standing before Allah, humbly asking for His divine guidance in understanding His commandments. Focus on the meaning of each word, seeking not just information, but true comprehension and the ability to apply it correctly.
Virtues & Benefits
This supplication, taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to his uncle Al-Abbas, directly asks Allah for three crucial elements for a scholar or a student of religion: knowledge of the Quran (the ultimate source), the ability to understand and apply its rulings (through reckoning and jurisprudence), and comprehensive understanding of the Deen itself. This leads to accuracy in Fiqh and the ability to derive rulings correctly, ensuring one's practice and teachings are sound.
Source & Authentication
Al-Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, teach me something I may ask Allah with.' He said: 'O Allah, teach me the Book and the calculation (or the understanding of the religion), and grant me security from every evil.' (Narrated by Ahmad in his Musnad, and by Al-Tirmidhi, who said it is Hasan Gharib. Abu Dawud also narrated it.)
