Knowledge & Learning
Hasan HadithSunan Ibn Majah 3833

اللَّهُمَّ انْفَعْنِي بِمَا عَلَّمْتَنِي، وَعَلِّمْنِي مَا يَنْفَعُنِي، وَزِدْنِي عِلْمًا

O Allah, benefit me with what You have taught me, teach me what is beneficial for me, and increase me in knowledge.

Allahumma-nf'ani bima 'allamtani, wa 'allimni ma yanfa'uni, wa zidni 'ilman

When to Read

This dua is perfect to recite at the beginning of any learning session, whether you're studying a specific subject, preparing for an exam, or simply reading Islamic texts. It's also fitting before embarking on any task where knowledge is needed, particularly when that knowledge is intended to serve Allah and His creation.

How to Read

Recite this with sincerity, focusing on the intention of seeking knowledge that pleases Allah and benefits yourself and others. Raising your hands slightly while making dua is a part of the Sunnah, though not strictly required for this specific supplication. It's best recited after the obligatory prayers or at any time you feel connected to your Lord.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is incredibly powerful because it doesn't just ask for knowledge, but for *beneficial* knowledge. It acknowledges Allah as the true teacher and seeks His guidance. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself taught this to his companions, showing its importance. Beneficial knowledge is that which leads to action, draws one closer to Allah, and allows one to contribute positively to the Ummah. It's a plea for knowledge that serves a higher purpose, aligning our learning with devotion.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this dua. Narrated Abu Hurairah: The Prophet ﷺ used to say: 'Allahumma-nf'ani bima 'allamtani, wa 'allimni ma yanfa'uni, wa zidni 'ilman. (O Allah, benefit me with what You have taught me, teach me what is beneficial for me, and increase me in knowledge).' (Sunan Ibn Majah 3833). This narration highlights the Prophet's own practice and his desire for beneficial knowledge, which he then transmitted to his followers.
