Dua for Knowledge that Fosters Humility and Reverence

Knowledge & Learning
Hasan HadithSunan Ibn Majah 925

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ عِلْمًا نَافِعًا، وَرِزْقًا طَيِّبًا، وَعَمَلًا مُتَقَبَّلًا

O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, pure provision, and deeds that are accepted.

Allahumma inni as'aluka 'ilman naafi'an, wa rizqan tayyiban, wa 'amalan mutaqabbalan.

When to Read

This dua is particularly potent when you begin a new pursuit of knowledge, like starting a class, reading a new book, or even when sitting down to study. It's a beautiful way to preface your learning, asking Allah to imbue that knowledge with goodness and benefit.

How to Read

Recite this sincerely, with your hands raised (if possible) and a focused heart. Understand that 'beneficial knowledge' isn't just about accumulating facts, but knowledge that impacts your character, actions, and ultimately brings you closer to Allah.

Virtues & Benefits

This supplication is a comprehensive request. 'Beneficial knowledge' ('ilman naafi'an) is knowledge that guides you to what is right, prevents you from straying, and increases your awareness of Allah. Such knowledge naturally leads to humility and reverence, as the more you learn about Allah's creation and His wisdom, the more your awe for Him grows. It's mentioned inauthentic narrations and scholarly understanding that knowledge that doesn't lead to humility is not truly beneficial. By asking for 'pure provision' (rizqan tayyiban) and 'accepted deeds' ('amalan mutaqabbalan), you're asking for a holistic life that is pleasing to Allah, where your learning is integrated into a righteous existence.

Source & Authentication

Narrated Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him): The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) used to say: 'O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, pure provision, and accepted deeds.' (Sunan Ibn Majah 925. Graded Hasan by Darussalam.)
