Knowledge & Learning
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 1049

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ عِلْمًا نَافِعًا، وَرِزْقًا طَيِّبًا، وَعَمَلًا مُتَقَبَّلًا.

O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, good provision, and deeds that are accepted.

Allahumma inni as'aluka 'ilman nafi'an, wa rizqan tayyiban, wa 'amalan mutaqabbalan.

When to Read

This dua is a staple for anyone seeking to learn. We can recite it at any time, but it's particularly potent when starting a new lesson, embarking on research, or simply beginning our day with the intention of seeking beneficial knowledge. It’s a way to align our pursuit of learning with Allah’s will and ask for His barakah in it.

How to Read

Recite this sincerely, with your hands raised in supplication if possible, facing the Qiblah. Focus on the meaning of each word: asking Allah for knowledge that truly benefits the heart and mind, sustenance that is pure and lawful, and actions that are pleasing to Him. Let the dua be an expression of your earnest desire to grow in understanding and good deeds.

Virtues & Benefits

This beautiful dua encompasses three essential pillars for a Muslim's life. Firstly, 'beneficial knowledge' ('ilman nafi'an) is knowledge that guides us to Allah, increases our taqwa (consciousness of Allah), and helps us implement His commands. Such knowledge naturally leads to humility, as we realize the vastness of what we don't know compared to Allah's infinite wisdom. Secondly, 'good provision' (rizqan tayyiban) ensures our livelihood is pure, avoiding haram. Thirdly, 'accepted deeds' ('amalan mutaqabbalan) is the ultimate goal – for our actions to be recognized and rewarded by Allah. When knowledge is truly beneficial, it prompts gratitude for the ability to learn and implement, and it humbles us before the One who grants these blessings. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ would often make this dua, indicating its immense importance (Sahih Muslim 747).
