Dua for Increased Understanding and Wisdom in Islamic Sciences

Knowledge & Learning
Hasan HadithSunan Ibn Majah 925

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ عِلْمًا نَافِعًا، وَرِزْقًا طَيِّبًا، وَعَمَلًا مُتَقَبَّلًا.

O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, good provision, and deeds that are accepted.

Allahumma inni as'aluka 'ilman nafi'an, wa rizqan tayyiban, wa 'amalan mutaqabbalan.

When to Read

This dua is particularly relevant when embarking on the study of any Islamic science, especially those that touch upon the unseen or deeper meanings, like Tawhid, Tafsir of ambiguous verses, or the inner dimensions of faith. Recite it at the beginning of your study sessions or when you feel a need for clarity and deeper insight into complex matters.

How to Read

Recite this supplication with sincere intention and focus. Raise your hands as you make the dua, if possible, and be certain of Allah's ability to grant your request. It’s best recited after the obligatory prayers, but can be said at any time, especially when facing a particular learning challenge or seeking divine guidance.

Virtues & Benefits

This comprehensive dua asks for three crucial elements for success in seeking knowledge and in life. 'Beneficial knowledge' ( 'ilman nafi'an) is knowledge that leads one closer to Allah, improves one's character, and allows one to act upon what is learned. This directly aids in understanding the deeper, metaphysical aspects of Islam, as true benefit comes from knowledge that transforms the heart. Seeking 'good provision' (rizqan tayyiban) ensures that one has the means to continue their studies without undue hardship. Finally, asking for 'accepted deeds' ( 'amalan mutaqabbalan) is the ultimate goal – that our efforts, including our pursuit of knowledge, are pleasing to Allah and bring us closer to Him.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) that when the Prophet (peace be upon him) said the Salam at the end of the Subh prayer, he would say: 'Allahumma inni as'aluka 'ilman nafi'an, wa rizqan tayyiban, wa 'amalan mutaqabbalan.' (O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, good provision, and deeds that are accepted.)
