Knowledge & Learning
Hasan HadithSunan at-Tirmidhi 3546

O Allah, grant me guidance of piety, and purification of the soul, and forgive me. Make me understand, and teach me, and make mention for me. Open to me the doors of Your grace and Your knowledge. Strengthen my faculties with patience, and make my tongue moist with remembrance (of You).

Allahumma-rzuqni hudat-tuqa, wa zakatan-nafsi, waghfir li, wa fahhimni, wa 'allimni, wadhkur li, waftah 'alayya abwaba fadlika wa 'ilmika, wa qawwi jawarihi minas-sabri, waj'al lisani rateeban bidh-dhikr.

When to Read

Recite this dua before embarking on a task that requires clear communication of knowledge, such as teaching, delivering a lecture, writing an article, or even engaging in a deep discussion. It is particularly beneficial when you feel overwhelmed by the complexity of a subject or struggle to find the right words. Making it a habit before seeking knowledge or teaching it reinforces the intention to benefit from and convey it effectively.

How to Read

It is best to make this dua with sincerity and a focused heart. Raise your hands as you would during other supplications. Understand the meaning of each phrase and ask Allah sincerely for the ability to articulate knowledge clearly. Consistency is key; making this a regular part of your routine when engaging with knowledge will, insha'Allah, yield the best results.

Virtues & Benefits

This powerful dua seeks several vital qualities from Allah. Firstly, 'guidance of piety' (hudat-tuqa) ensures that the knowledge gained and shared is used in accordance with Allah's commands. 'Purification of the soul' (zakatan-nafsi) ensures that our intentions are pure and our conveying of knowledge is for the sake of Allah, not for show. The request to 'understand and teach' directly addresses the core need for clarity. Asking Allah to 'open the doors of His grace and knowledge' is a plea for divine insight and wisdom. Strengthening faculties with 'patience' is crucial, as teaching and learning can be arduous. Finally, making the tongue 'moist with remembrance' signifies eloquence and the ability to speak about beneficial matters, including divine knowledge, with ease and fluency.

Source & Authentication

The narration includes the following related supplication made by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ: ‘Abdullah ibn Mas‘ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet ﷺ used to supplicate: > **Arabic:** اللَّهُمَّ عَلِّمْنِي الصَّوَابَ، وَفَهِّمْنِي، وَاذْكُرْ لِي > **Translation:** "O Allah, teach me correctness, make me understand, and mention for me." Then he mentioned a similar du'a, which is the one translated above. The context implies that these supplications were made to enhance understanding and the ability to articulate knowledge correctly and effectively. The chain for this hadith is considered Hasan.
