اللَّهُمَّ فَقِّهْنِي فِي الدِّينِ وَعَلِّمْنِي التَّأْوِيلَ
O Allah, grant me understanding in religion and teach me the interpretation (of the Qur'an and Sunnah).
Allahumma faqqihni fid-deen wa 'allimnit-ta'weel
When to Read
Recite this dua when embarking on the study of Hadith, especially when encountering complex chains of narration (isnad) or intricate texts that require deep understanding. It is particularly beneficial before and during sessions dedicated to scrutinizing the authenticity and meaning of prophetic traditions.
How to Read
Recite with sincere intention and focus. It is recommended to say this dua when you begin your study session, perhaps after completing your initial recitation of the Qur'an or other relevant scholarly works. Maintain a state of purity and humility, seeking Allah's aid directly. Repetition, especially during moments of contemplation or when facing a specific challenge in understanding, can be very effective.
Virtues & Benefits
This dua, as taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), is a comprehensive request for both foundational knowledge ('understanding in religion') and the capacity for deeper insight ('teach me the interpretation'). Understanding the interpretation of Hadith chains (isnad) and their texts (matn) is crucial for discerning authentic narrations and grasping their intended meanings. By asking Allah for this, we seek the ability to unravel the complexities of hadith transmission and comprehension, which is essential for correctly practicing our faith.
