Knowledge & Learning
Sahih HadithMusnad Ahmad 3073

اللَّهُمَّ فَقِّهْنِي فِي الدِّينِ وَعَلِّمْنِي التَّأْوِيلَ

O Allah, grant me understanding in the religion and teach me interpretation.

Allahumma faqqihni fid-din wa 'allimni at-ta'wil

When to Read

Imagine you're grappling with a complex fiqh issue, or trying to reconcile differing scholarly opinions on a matter. When you feel a knot in your mind, seeking clarity in the vast ocean of Islamic knowledge, this is the dua to turn to. It's particularly powerful before diving deep into tafsir, hadith commentary, or any intricate Islamic science. Think of it as a spiritual preparation before embarking on a journey of profound intellectual engagement with the sacred texts.

How to Read

When you recite this beautiful supplication, remember its origin: a direct prayer from the Prophet ﷺ for his young cousin, Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him). As you say 'Allahumma faqqihni fid-din wa 'allimni at-ta'wil,' internalize that you are asking Allah to bestow upon *you* a portion of that same profound religious understanding and insightful interpretation. Recite it with humility, recognizing that true knowledge is a gift from Allah, and combine it with your earnest efforts in study. Don't just utter the words; let your heart truly yearn for that divine illumination.

Virtues & Benefits

The sheer power of this dua lies in its history. Ibn Abbas, for whom this prayer was made, became known as the 'Interpreter of the Quran' and one of the most knowledgeable companions in fiqh and tafsir. When we make this dua, we are asking Allah to grant us a similar blessing: a deep, intuitive understanding of our deen and the ability to interpret its texts accurately. It's a key that unlocks insights, helps us navigate difficult scholarly discussions, and ultimately brings clarity and conviction to our faith. It humbles us while empowering us with divine assistance, turning potential intellectual confusion into spiritual wisdom.
