Knowledge & Learning
Hasan HadithSunan Ibn Majah 925

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ عِلْمًا نَافِعًا، وَرِزْقًا طَيِّبًا، وَعَمَلًا مُتَقَبَّلًا

O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, goodly provision, and acceptable deeds.

Allahumma inni as'aluka 'ilman naafi'an, wa rizqan tayyiban, wa 'amalan mutaqabbalan

When to Read

This dua is especially potent when you are embarking on studying hadith, seeking to understand its nuances, or feel overwhelmed by the sheer volume of information and differing opinions. Recite it before you begin your study session, or whenever you feel a need for clarity and guidance in distinguishing authentic narrations from weaker ones. It's a prayer for the intellect to be sharpened and for the heart to be guided towards truth.

How to Read

Make this dua with sincerity and a humble heart. Ensure you are in a state of wudu if possible, face the Qiblah, and raise your hands. Focus on the meaning of the words, truly asking Allah for the ability to discern truth. It's beneficial to repeat it three times, as the Prophet ﷺ often did with important supplications.

Virtues & Benefits

This comprehensive dua seeks three vital elements for a Muslim seeking knowledge. Beneficial knowledge ('ilman naafi'an) is that which leads one closer to Allah and helps one act upon its principles, crucial for understanding hadith properly. Goodly provision (rizqan tayyiban) ensures that one's sustenance is pure, which can impact the clarity of one's mind and heart. Acceptable deeds ('amalan mutaqabbalan) are those performed according to the Sunnah, reinforcing the practical application of the knowledge gained, including the discerning of authentic hadith for correct practice.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to supplicate after the Fajr prayer: 'Allahumma inni as'aluka 'ilman naafi'an, wa rizqan tayyiban, wa 'amalan mutaqabbalan.' (O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, goodly provision, and acceptable deeds.)
