Knowledge & Learning
Hasan HadithSunan Ibn Majah 393

اللَّهُمَّ فَقِّهْنِي فِي الدِّينِ وَعَلِّمْنِي التَّأْوِيلَ

O Allah, grant me understanding of the religion and teach me its interpretation.

Allahumma faqqihni fid-deen wa 'allimnit-ta'weel

When to Read

This dua is perfect to recite when embarking on a journey to learn more about the Sunnah, whether you're starting a new book, attending a lecture, or simply dedicating time to study. It's particularly beneficial before delving into complex texts or when seeking clarity on a particular aspect of the Prophet's ﷺ teachings.

How to Read

Recite this supplication with sincere intention, focusing your heart on seeking Allah's guidance. Raise your hands in supplication as you do when making other duas. Utter the words clearly, contemplating their meaning. It's best to say it regularly, especially when you begin an act of seeking knowledge related to the Sunnah.

Virtues & Benefits

This powerful dua directly asks Allah for two crucial things: 'understanding of the religion' (fiqh) and 'its interpretation' (ta'weel). Fiqh here encompasses a deep grasp of Islamic rulings and wisdom, while ta'weel refers to understanding the deeper meanings, the context, and the wisdom behind the rulings and practices. By asking for these, we are seeking an understanding that goes beyond mere memorization, aiming for insight into the spirit and purpose of the Sunnah. This leads to a more meaningful practice and a stronger connection to the Prophet's ﷺ way of life.

Source & Authentication

Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ put his hand on my shoulder and said: 'Allah is Sufficient for him who seeks abundance through the ways of the Book. The greatest of the treasures of a believing servant are the words of remembrance: "Glory be to Allah, and praise be to Allah, and there is no god but Allah, and Allah is the Greatest." And he said: 'O Allah, teach me understanding of the Book (or 'the interpretation').' Then he said: 'O Allah, grant me understanding of the religion and teach me the interpretation.'
