اللَّهُمَّ فَقِّهْنِي فِي الدِّينِ، وَعَلِّمْنِي التَّأْوِيلَ

When to Read
This dua is profoundly relevant when you find yourself grappling with differing scholarly opinions on a matter, particularly concerning Quranic verses or Hadith. It's a perfect supplication to make during personal study sessions, when attending lectures, or even during quiet contemplation before making a decision based on religious texts. Recite it when you feel overwhelmed by the nuances and potential contradictions in interpretations, seeking divine guidance to discern the truth.
How to Read
Recite this dua with sincerity and a humble heart. Imagine yourself standing before Allah, earnestly seeking His divine wisdom. It's best recited after your obligatory prayers (salah) when your heart is most receptive, or during the blessed times like the last third of the night. Focus on the meaning of the words, asking Allah to open your mind and heart to understanding His Deen. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself would make this specific dua, which highlights its importance and effectiveness.
Virtues & Benefits
This dua is a direct supplication taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to his uncle, Abdullah ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with both), demonstrating its immense value. By asking Allah to grant 'understanding in religion' (fiqh), we are asking for a deep, insightful comprehension that goes beyond mere memorization. The request to be taught 'ta'weel' (interpretation) specifically relates to understanding the deeper meanings and wisdom behind the Quran. This supplication, therefore, equips a believer to navigate complex religious texts, resolve apparent conflicts through sound reasoning and divine insight, and ultimately, to live by the correct understanding of Islam. It’s a tool for intellectual and spiritual growth in seeking knowledge.

Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) said: The Prophet (ﷺ) said, 'O Allah, teach him the Book (i.e., the Quran).' He repeated this three times. Then the Prophet (ﷺ) said, 'O Allah, grant him understanding in religion and teach him the interpretation (of the Quran).' (Translation of Sunan Ibn Majah, Book 1, Hadith 254)
