Dua for Clarity When Confused About a Religious Matter

Knowledge & Learning
Sahih HadithSunan Ibn Majah 925

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ عِلْمًا نَافِعًا، وَرِزْقًا طَيِّبًا، وَعَمَلًا مُتَقَبَّلًا.

O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, good provision, and deeds that are accepted.

Allahumma inni as'aluka 'ilman nafi'an, wa rizqan tayyiban, wa 'amalan mutaqabbalan.

When to Read

This dua is perfect for any time you find yourself uncertain about a religious ruling, struggling to understand a concept, or feeling overwhelmed by differing opinions. It's particularly beneficial after performing *Salat al-Istikhara* (the prayer of seeking guidance), or simply when you sit down to study or reflect on religious matters and feel a lack of clarity.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and focus, preferably after your obligatory prayers or during times of personal reflection. Raise your hands as you would when making supplication. Ask Allah (SWT) directly for clarity and understanding. Remember that this is a request for 'beneficial knowledge' – knowledge that not only informs but also guides your actions and brings you closer to Him.

Virtues & Benefits

This powerful supplication, taught by our Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, asks Allah for three of the most crucial elements for a Muslim. Beneficial knowledge helps us navigate life's complexities and make sound decisions, including those related to our faith. Good provision (rizq tayyib) ensures our sustenance is lawful and pure, free from questionable sources. Finally, asking for accepted deeds means our efforts in worship and good works are recognized and rewarded by Allah, which is the ultimate goal. Seeking this specific combination can illuminate confusion and bring peace to the heart.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to say when asked a question: 'O Allah, Lord of the seven heavens and the Great Throne, our Lord and the Lord of all things, the Revealer of the Torah, the Gospel, and the Qur'an, the Cleaver of the seed and the kernel! I seek refuge in You from the evil of everything You have seized by the forelock. You are the First, and nothing is before You. You are the Last, and nothing is after You. You are the Apparent, and nothing is above You. You are the Hidden, and nothing is below You. Relieve us of our debt and enrich us from need.' And when he was silent, that would mean he had been asked something. He also used to say: 'Allahumma inni as'aluka 'ilman nafi'an, wa rizqan tayyiban, wa 'amalan mutaqabbalan.' (O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, good provision, and deeds that are accepted.)
