Knowledge & Learning
Hasan HadithSunan Ibn Majah 250

اللَّهُمَّ فَقِّهْنِي فِي الدِّينِ وَعَلِّمْنِي التَّأْوِيلَ

O Allah, grant me understanding in the religion and teach me the interpretation.

Allahumma faqqihni fid-deen wa 'allimni at-ta'weel

When to Read

This dua is perfect to recite whenever you are studying Islamic knowledge, particularly when encountering complex rulings or differing scholarly opinions. It's a humble request to Allah to open your heart and mind to the wisdom behind the commandments, helping you grasp not just the 'what' but the 'why'. Recite it before or during your study sessions.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a focused intention on seeking Allah's guidance for understanding. Raise your hands as you do, similar to how one would make other supplications. Focus on the meaning of the words, asking Allah to grant you the insight to comprehend the intricate details and underlying wisdom of the Shari'ah.

Virtues & Benefits

This supplication, taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to his noble companion Abdullah ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), is a powerful tool for anyone seeking deep and accurate knowledge of Islam. By asking Allah to grant 'fiqh' (understanding/jurisprudence) and 'ta'weel' (interpretation/exegesis), we are asking for the ability to discern the wisdom and deeper meanings within the Quran and Sunnah, leading to sound judgment and a more profound connection with our faith.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ took hold of Abdullah ibn Abbas's shoulder and said: 'O Allah, teach him the Book (Quran).' Another narration adds: 'O Allah, grant him understanding in the religion and teach him the interpretation.' — Reported by al-Bukhari (143) and Muslim (2477) in slightly different wording. The wording used in the dua is specifically from Sunan Ibn Majah (250), authenticated as Hasan.
