When to Read
This dua is perfect for when you are studying hadith, delving into commentaries, or seeking to discern the authentic from the fabricated. Recite it before you begin your studies or whenever you feel a need for greater insight and precision in understanding the Sunnah.
How to Read
With sincerity and focus, raise your hands as the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us for supplication. Imagine Allah granting you the light of knowledge and the ability to correctly interpret His Messenger's ﷺ words. Let your intention be pure – to seek truth and follow the Sunnah accurately.
Virtues & Benefits
This beautiful dua was made by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ for his beloved companion Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him). By asking Allah for deep understanding ('fiqh') and the ability to interpret ('ta'weel'), we are seeking the very tools needed to navigate the vast ocean of hadith literature. It helps in distinguishing sound narrations and understanding their deeper meanings, safeguarding us from misinterpretations and following weak or fabricated reports. This path leads to a more profound and correct practice of Islam.
Source & Authentication
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ embraced Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) and prayed: 'O Allah, teach him wisdom and the interpretation of the Book.' (Sunan Ibn Majah 250, Sahih al-Bukhari 143, Sahih Muslim 244). The word 'ta'weel' refers to the interpretation of the Qur'an, but the scholars have understood this supplication to encompass the understanding of the Sunnah as well, as both are sources of Islamic law and practice.
