اللَّهُمَّ فَقِّهْنِي فِي الدِّينِ، وَعَلِّمْنِي التَّأْوِيلَ
O Allah, grant me understanding of the Deen (religion) and teach me its interpretation.
Allahumma faqqihni fid-deen, wa 'allimnit-ta'weel
When to Read
This dua is particularly potent when you're studying Islamic texts, especially the intricate meanings within Ahadeeth. It's perfect for times when you feel a text is eluding you, or you desire a deeper, more nuanced comprehension. Recite it before you begin your study session, or whenever you encounter a passage that requires profound insight.
How to Read
Recite this dua with sincerity and focus. Imagine yourself seeking this understanding directly from Allah. Maintain a state of purity (wudu) if possible, and turn your heart towards seeking knowledge for the sake of Allah. This isn't just about memorizing words; it's about an earnest supplication for divine illumination.
Virtues & Benefits
This supplication, famously made by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ for Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), is a direct request for two crucial aspects of religious knowledge: 'Figh' (deep understanding and jurisprudence) and 'Ta'weel' (interpretation and exegesis). By asking for these, one seeks not just superficial knowledge, but the ability to grasp the wisdom and intended meanings behind the Quran and Sunnah. This understanding allows us to practice our faith more accurately and to explain it to others with clarity. The Prophet ﷺ said about Ibn Abbas: 'O Allah, teach him the Book [Qur'an].' (Sahih al-Bukhari 143; Sahih Muslim 2403). This specific dua focuses on the understanding of religious texts, which encompasses Ahadeeth.
Source & Authentication
Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) embraced me and said: 'O Allah, teach him wisdom.' Another narration: 'O Allah, teach him the Book (the Qur'an).' I said to my father: 'O father, teach me the interpretation of the Qur'an.' He said: 'My son, that is a difficult matter, but if you wish to ask for it, then say: O Allah, make me understand the Deen and teach me the interpretation.' So I said it. And Allah taught me the interpretation. (Reported by Ibn Majah, graded Hasan)
