Knowledge & Learning
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 742

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ عِلْمًا نَافِعًا، وَرِزْقًا طَيِّبًا، وَعَمَلًا مُتَقَبَّلًا

O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, goodly provision, and acceptable deeds.

Allahumma inni as'aluka 'ilman naafi'an, wa rizqan tayyiban, wa 'amalan mutaqabbalan

When to Read

This dua is perfect for the start of any academic endeavor, especially for PhD students and researchers embarking on new projects, facing complex problems, or feeling overwhelmed by their studies. Recite it before starting your research sessions, writing, or attending critical meetings and presentations. It's a way to imbue your efforts with sincerity and seek divine assistance from the outset.

How to Read

Make this dua with sincerity and focus. Raise your hands as you do when making other duas. Have a clear intention of seeking Allah's help in gaining knowledge that is beneficial, not just for you, but for the wider community, and that your work will be accepted and pleasing to Him. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ often made this specific supplication after the Fajr prayer, so it's a beautiful practice to adopt it during that time as well, but it is potent at any time you begin your intellectual work.

Virtues & Benefits

Seeking 'beneficial knowledge' (علمًا نافعًا) is a profoundly important pursuit in Islam. It's knowledge that leads to correct belief and action, and can be used to serve Allah and His creation. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us to seek this specifically, as not all knowledge is inherently beneficial. Asking for 'goodly provision' (رزقًا طيبًا) encompasses not only financial sustenance but also the purity and goodness within it. Finally, asking for 'acceptable deeds' (عملًا متقبلًا) ensures that our efforts, including our research and studies, are done for the sake of Allah and meet His standards, which is the ultimate goal of a believer.

‘Umar ibn Al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to say when he supplicated: ‘O Allah, provide me with beneficial knowledge, goodly provision, and acceptable deeds.’
