Dua for Clarity and Eloquence in Explaining Islamic Knowledge

Knowledge & Learning
Hasan HadithSunan Ibn Majah 255

اللَّهُمَّ فَقِّهْنِي فِي الدِّينِ، وَعَلِّمْنِي التَّأْوِيلَ

O Allah, grant me understanding in the religion and teach me the interpretation (of the Quran).

Allahumma faqqihni fid-deen, wa 'allimnit-ta'weel

When to Read

This powerful supplication is ideal to recite before embarking on explaining Islamic concepts, whether in a formal setting, a casual discussion, or even when preparing to write about them. It's particularly relevant when you find yourself needing to articulate nuanced or complex matters that require depth and precision. Make it a habit before any teaching or da'wah effort.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincere intention and focus. Raise your hands as you make this supplication, emulating the Prophet's ﷺ practice. Ensure you understand the meaning of the words, asking Allah to open your understanding of His Deen and grant you the ability to comprehend and convey its meanings accurately. It is best recited after obligatory prayers or during times when dua is more likely to be answered.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is directly attributed to our beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, who made it for himself. By reciting it, we are following his Sunnah and asking Allah for the same divine blessing. Understanding the religion (fiqh) is the foundation of accurate knowledge, and 'ta'weel' (interpretation) refers to understanding the deeper meanings, especially of the Quran. This helps in dispelling misconceptions and clarifying complex issues for ourselves and others, making us effective communicators of Islamic knowledge. Imam Ibn al-Qayyim mentions in 'Madarij al-Salikin' that seeking knowledge is a form of worship, and asking Allah for clarity in conveying it amplifies the reward of that effort.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated that Ibn Abbas said: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ put his arm around me and said: 'O Allah, teach him the Book (i.e., the Quran).'" (Sunan Ibn Majah 255). Another narration states: "O Allah, grant him understanding in the religion and teach him the interpretation." (This addition is found in some versions and attributed as an expansion of the prayer for Ibn Abbas, highlighting the essence of seeking both understanding and the skill to interpret/explain).
