اللَّهُمَّ آتِنِي حِكْمَةً وَفَهْمًا، وَزِدْنِي عِلْمًا نَافِعًا.

O Allah, grant me wisdom and understanding, and increase me in beneficial knowledge.

Allahumma atini hikmatan wa fahman, wa zidni 'ilman nafi'an.

When to Read

This dua is particularly relevant when engaging with Islamic texts, studying hadith, or listening to lectures. Recite it before you begin your studies or when you encounter information that requires careful evaluation, especially when navigating differing opinions or potentially weak narrations. It's a prayer for guidance to discern truth from falsehood.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and focus, raising your hands if appropriate, as you would for other supplications. Imagine asking the All-Knowing Allah for the ability to understand His deen clearly. The act of making dua itself is an acknowledgment of our reliance on Him for knowledge and discernment.

Virtues & Benefits

Seeking beneficial knowledge is a highly praised act in Islam. This dua, by asking for wisdom, understanding, and increased useful knowledge, directly aids in the pursuit of accurate understanding of the deen. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said, "Whoever Allah wishes good for, He gives him understanding in the religion." (Sahih al-Bukhari 71) This implies that a deep grasp of religious matters is a sign of Allah's favor. By seeking beneficial knowledge and discernment, we protect ourselves from misguidance and are better equipped to follow the authentic Sunnah.
