Knowledge & Learning
Hasan HadithSunan Ibn Majah 3833

اللَّهُمَّ انْفَعْنِي بِمَا عَلَّمْتَنِي، وَعَلِّمْنِي مَا يَنْفَعُنِي، وَزِدْنِي عِلْمًا

O Allah, make beneficial what You have taught me, teach me the knowledge that will benefit me, and increase me in knowledge.

Allahumma anfa'ni bima 'allamtani, wa 'allimni ma yanfa'uni, wa zidni 'ilman

When to Read

Recite this dua before, during, or after engaging in scholarly discussions, debates, or any form of learning. It's particularly useful when seeking to understand complex issues, seeking guidance from teachers, or participating in discussions that aim for truth and understanding. It can also be a regular supplication for anyone committed to lifelong learning.

How to Read

Recite with sincerity and a focused heart, reflecting on the meaning of the words. Visualize yourself benefiting from the knowledge being shared or debated, and actively seeking Allah's help in understanding and applying it. Approach discussions with humility and a genuine desire to learn, rather than to win an argument. Remember that the goal of scholarly exchange is often to uncover truth, clarify understanding, and benefit the Ummah.

Virtues & Benefits

This comprehensive dua seeks Allah's blessing in the knowledge we already possess, asking that it become a source of benefit in this life and the next. It then asks for the acquisition of new, useful knowledge. Crucially, it asks for an increase in knowledge, implying a continuous journey of learning. When applied in the context of scholarly discussions, this dua helps purify intentions, ensuring the pursuit of knowledge is for Allah's sake and for the betterment of oneself and others. It fosters an environment of mutual respect and intellectual honesty, where the focus is on truth and understanding rather than ego or contention.

Source & Authentication

Narrated by Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him): We used to learn these words during the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) as a servant learns, [i.e. we were taught this dua]: 'Allahumma inni as'aluka 'ilman naafi'an, wa rizqan tayyiban, wa 'amalan mutaqabbalan.' (O Allah, I ask You for knowledge that is beneficial, and a good provision, and deeds that are accepted). And Ibn Majah narrated: Allahumma inni as'aluka 'ilman naafi'an, wa rizqan tayyiban, wa 'amalan mutaqabbalan. [This is slightly different wording but the same essence of seeking beneficial knowledge]. The version used in the entry is also narrated and attributed to the Prophet (ﷺ) by scholars for seeking beneficial knowledge and an increase in it.
