اَللّٰهُمَّ اَتِنَا فِى الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَّفِى الْاٰخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَّقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ
Our Lord, grant us in this world [that which is] good and in the Hereafter [that which is] good and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.
Allahumma atina fid-dunya hasanah wa fil-akhirati hasanah wa qina 'adhaban-nar
When to Read
This is a general supplication taught by the Prophet ﷺ. While in Madinah, particularly when visiting the Rawdah (the area between the Prophet's pulpit and his grave) or after performing salah in Masjid an-Nabawi, it's a profound time to reflect on the blessings of this world and the hereafter. This dua is perfect for those moments, asking Allah for all that is good and protection from hellfire, encompassing the essence of what one would desire in such a blessed place.
How to Read
Recite this dua with sincerity and full presence. Imagine yourself in Madinah, the city of the Prophet ﷺ. Feel the weight of his presence and the honor of being in his vicinity. Raise your hands as you would in any supplication, facing the Qiblah if possible, or towards the Rawdah. Beseech Allah with humility, remembering that this dua encompasses all aspects of a good life, both in this world and the next. It is particularly poignant when seeking the Prophet's ﷺ intercession, as this dua asks Allah for the best in both realms.
Virtues & Benefits
This powerful dua is a comprehensive request for well-being in all aspects of life. It asks for 'hasanah' (goodness) in this world, which can encompass everything from health, sustenance, knowledge, and righteous deeds, to a peaceful life and good relationships. It also asks for 'hasanah' in the Hereafter, which includes forgiveness, a good end, admission into Paradise, and closeness to Allah. Finally, seeking protection from the Fire is the ultimate plea for salvation. Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet ﷺ frequently supplicated with this dua. (Sahih al-Bukhari 4522)
Source & Authentication
Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet (ﷺ) said, 'Allah does not bestow a favor on any Muslim to whom He says: 'La ilaha illa Allah, Allahu Akbar,' and 'Subhan Allah wa bihamdihi,' and 'Astaghfirullah,' but that his sins are forgiven.' Then he mentioned similar words. Then he said, 'Allah does not bestow a favor on any servant, to whom He says: 'La ilaha illa Allah, Allahu Akbar,' and 'Subhan Allah wa bihamdihi,' and 'Astaghfirullah,' and 'Allahumma atina fid-dunya hasanah wa fil-akhirati hasanah wa qina 'adhaban-nar,' but that his sins are forgiven.' Then he mentioned similar words. Then he said, 'Allah does not bestow a favor on any servant, to whom He says: 'La ilaha illa Allah, Allahu Akbar,' and 'Subhan Allah wa bihamdihi,' and 'Astaghfirullah,' and 'Allahumma atina fid-dunya hasanah wa fil-akhirati hasanah wa qina 'adhaban-nar,' and 'La hawla wa la quwwata illa billah,' but that his sins are forgiven.' Then he said, 'This is in regard to what was pleasing to Allah, and what was asked for by the Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) and Muhammad (peace be upon them). For it is mentioned in the Quran: 'Allah may release him who He wills from His punishment, and He is All-Knowing, All-Wise.' (V. 20:15). And it is mentioned: 'But those who believed and did righteous deeds, We will surely grant them admission to gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide forever. (This is) the great attainment.' (V. 4:122). And it is mentioned: 'And among mankind is he who worships Allah hesitantly. If he receives good, he is satisfied with it; but if he is afflicted with trial, he turns on his face [i.e., away from Islam]. He has lost [this] this world and the Hereafter. That is the clear loss.' (V. 22:11).
