Dua for Remembering the Prophet's Thirst and Hunger During Hajj and Umrah

Hajj & Umrah
Hasan HadithSunan Ibn Majah 590

O Allah, make it a blessed Hajj, a thanked-for effort, a forgiven sin, an accepted deed, and a trade that will never perish. Make my selling profitable for my trade, and enrich me with Your bounty over others. Indeed, it (this life) has reached what you see of the world and its affairs, and we seek refuge in You from the evil of this world and the evil of what is in it, and we ask You to enrich us with Your bounty over others.

Allahumma-j'alhu hajjan mabrooran, wa sa'yan mashkooran, wa dhanban maghfooran, wa 'amalan mutaqabbalan, wa tijaratan lan taboor. Khabbirnee bibay'ee 'an tijaratee, wa aghninee bifadlika 'amman siwak. Fa innahu qad balagha minad-dunya wa minal-umoor ma tara, wa nahnu na'oodhu bika min sharrid-dunya wa sharrima feeha, wa nas'aluka an tughniyana bifadlika 'amman siwak.

When to Read

This is a beautiful dua to recite when making tawaf or sa'ee during Hajj or Umrah. As you feel the exertion, the heat, and perhaps the thirst and hunger, remember the immense sacrifices of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and his companions, may Allah be pleased with them. Reciting this dua can help you connect to the spiritual significance of these acts of worship, focusing on the blessings, forgiveness, and eternal reward rather than just the physical challenges.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincere intention and focus. Imagine yourself walking in the footsteps of the Prophet ﷺ. Reflect on the meaning of each phrase, asking Allah for acceptance, guidance, and sufficiency. It's best recited while in a state of wudu, facing the Kaaba if possible, and with a humble heart. Remember that Hajj and Umrah are journeys of the heart as much as they are physical journeys.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encapsulates the core aspirations of a pilgrim: acceptance of deeds, spiritual purification, and divine sufficiency. By asking for a blessed Hajj, thanked-for effort, and forgiven sin, we seek the ultimate goals of pilgrimage. The mention of a trade that will not perish points towards the eternal reward in the hereafter. The plea for Allah's bounty over others reminds us of our absolute reliance on Him, especially in the face of worldly needs and temptations. Remembering the Prophet's ﷺ own struggles during these sacred rituals can deepen our appreciation and strengthen our resolve, turning our physical challenges into spiritual blessings.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from Ibn Umar that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: 'Do not envy one another, nor boycott one another, nor hate one another, nor be jealous of one another. And be, O servants of Allah, brothers. It is not lawful for a Muslim to abandon his brother for more than three nights. (In this narration:) A man who has been wronged may call out: O Allah, avenge me! But it is not for a believer to be persistent in asking for his rights, rather it is for a believer to bear patiently, and to forgive. A man said: O Messenger of Allah, how many times shall I forgive my servant? He turned away from him. He said: O Messenger of Allah, how many times shall I forgive my servant? He said: Seventy times. A man said: O Messenger of Allah, what is it that I shall say? He said: Say: 'O Allah, forgive me, have mercy on me, guide me, and provide for me.' A man said: O Messenger of Allah, what is it that I shall say to my Hajj? He said: Say: 'O Allah, make it a blessed Hajj, a thanked-for effort, a forgiven sin, and an accepted deed, and a trade that will not perish. Make my selling profitable for my trade, and enrich me with Your bounty over others.' The narrator said: It was said to him: 'It has been said that it is a trade that will not perish.' He said: 'Indeed it is.'
