Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 1342

O Allah, I ask You for the goodness of this journey and the goodness of what is in it, and I seek refuge in You from the evil of this journey and the evil of what is in it. O Allah, I ask You for the goodness of this mount (or vehicle) and the goodness of what is in it, and I seek refuge in You from its evil and the evil of what is in it. O Allah, I ask You for the goodness of this land and the goodness of its people and the goodness of what is in it, and I seek refuge in You from the evil of this land and the evil of its people and the evil of what is in it.

Allahumma inni as'aluka khaira hadhihis-safari wa khaira ma fihi wa a'udhu bika min sharri hadhihis-safari wa sharri ma fihi. Allahumma inni as'aluka khaira hadhihid-dabbati wa khaira ma fiha wa a'udhu bika min sharriha wa sharri ma fiha. Allahumma inni as'aluka khaira hadhihil-ardi wa khaira ahliha wa khaira ma fiha wa a'udhu bika min sharri hadhihil-ardi wa sharri ahliha wa sharri ma fiha.

When to Read

This comprehensive supplication is ideally recited before embarking on any journey, whether it's for Hajj, Umrah, visiting family, or any other purpose. It should be said when you are about to set off, and then repeated, adapting the wording, when entering a new town, city, or even a new neighborhood. For Hajj and Umrah, it's particularly relevant as you travel to the sacred lands and enter new, blessed territories.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincere intention and a hopeful heart. Focus on the meaning as you say the words, asking Allah to grant you the best of your travels and protect you from harm. When entering a new place, you can adapt the dua to say, 'Allahumma inni as'aluka khaira hadhihil-baladi...' (O Allah, I ask You for the goodness of this city...). The key is the earnest request for divine protection and success in new environments.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encompasses seeking the best and taking refuge from the worst in three crucial aspects of travel: the journey itself, the mode of transport, and the destination. It’s a holistic plea to Allah for safety, prosperity, and protection from all forms of harm, seen and unseen. When performing Hajj or Umrah, such supplications are amplified, seeking Allah’s blessings for a spiritually fulfilling and smoothly executed pilgrimage. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us comprehensive duas that cover all potential needs, and this is a prime example of seeking Allah’s covering for every stage and element of our travels.

When the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) mounted his camel for the journey, he would say 'Allahu Akbar' three times, then he would say: 'Glorified is He Who has subjected this to us, and we could not have done it ourselves. And to our Lord we are indeed to return. O Allah, we ask You for virtue and piety in our journey this, and righteousness in our deeds. O Allah, make this journey easy for us and roll up the distance for us. O Allah, You are the Companion in the journey and the Successor in the family. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the hardship of the journey and the evil of the sights and the evil of the return in wealth and family.' And when he returned, he would say these words and add: 'We are returning, repenting, worshipping, and to our Lord we are returning.' (Sahih Muslim 1342) Another narration states: When the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) set out on a journey, he would say: 'O Allah, I ask You for the best in this journey and the best of what is in it, and I seek refuge in You from the evil of this journey and the evil of what is in it. O Allah, I ask You for goodness and guidance, and I seek refuge in You from evil and the causes of evil.' (Sahih Muslim 1342)
