Hajj & Umrah
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 4522

رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِي الْآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ

Our Lord, give us in this world [that which is] good and in the Hereafter [that which is] good and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.

Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanatan wa fil-akhirati hasanatan wa qina 'adhaban-nar

When to Read

This beautiful and comprehensive dua is perfect for reciting during the days and weeks following your return from Hajj or Umrah. It's a time when your heart is still tender from the spiritual heights you've reached, and you're looking for ways to carry that sense of purpose into your everyday life. Recite it after your obligatory prayers, or during quiet moments of reflection, as you transition back to your routine.

How to Read

Raise your hands as you make this dua, facing the Qiblah if possible, though not strictly necessary after returning home. Recite it with sincerity, focusing on the meaning of asking Allah for goodness in both this life and the next, and protection from the Fire. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ often made this dua, highlighting its comprehensive nature and immense benefit. Try to recite it consistently.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encapsulates the essence of seeking Allah's pleasure in all aspects of life. After the intense spiritual experience of Hajj or Umrah, where we strive for Allah's acceptance, it's natural to want that elevated state to continue. This supplication directly asks for 'hasanah' (goodness) in this world – meaning a good livelihood, righteous family, beneficial knowledge, and a peaceful life – and 'hasanah' in the Hereafter, which is entry into Jannah and seeing Allah. It’s a powerful way to ground your renewed sense of purpose in seeking ultimate success, not just worldly gains.

Source & Authentication

Narrated Anas: The Prophet (ﷺ) said, 'Allah does not reject the supplication of a person who says: "O Allah! Grant me good in this world and good in the Hereafter and save me from the punishment of the Fire." But he used to supplicate a lot.' (Sahih al-Bukhari 4522). This hadith emphasizes the Prophet's ﷺ own frequent use of this dua, indicating its profound importance and comprehensiveness.
