Guidance & Hidayah
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 1804

اللَّهُمَّ اهْدِنَا سَوَاءَ السَّبِيلِ

O Allah, guide us to the straight path.

Allahumma ihdina sawā'as-sabīl

When to Read

This is a fundamental dua to make regularly, especially in times when you encounter conflicting information, hear rumors, or feel doubt creeping into your heart. Recite it before engaging with news, social media, or discussions where truth might be obscured. It's also beneficial to make it a part of your daily supplications after obligatory prayers.

How to Read

Recite this concise but powerful dua with sincere intention and a humble heart. Imagine yourself asking the One who has perfect knowledge and control over all paths to show you the truth. Focus on the meaning of seeking the straight path, which encompasses all aspects of life and belief. Raise your hands slightly, as is customary when making dua, and pour your heart out to Allah.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua, though short, encapsulates a profound request for all-encompassing guidance. Seeking Allah’s guidance to the 'straight path' (Sirat al-Mustaqim) means asking Him to direct you to the truth in belief (Aqeedah), action (Amal), and understanding (Fahm). It is the core supplication that protects us from straying into falsehoods, innovations (bid'ah), and misinterpretations that can lead us away from the Sunnah and the Quran. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us this dua as part of a longer supplication for seeking guidance, highlighting its crucial importance.

Narrated Ibn Mas'ud: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) taught me the comprehensive way of supplication. He said: Say: O Allah, I ask You for guidance, piety, chastity, and contentment (to be rich). And in another narration: Say: O Allah, I ask You for guidance, piety, abstinence from that which is forbidden, and sufficiency (contentment). اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ الْهُدَى وَالتُّقَى وَالْعَفَافَ وَالْغِنَى (Allahumma inni as'alukal-huda wat-tuqa wal-'afafa wal-ghina) And in another narration: Say: O Allah, I ask You for guidance, piety, abstinence, and contentment. اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ الْهُدَى وَالتُّقَى وَالْعِفَّةَ وَالْقَنَاعَةَ (Allahumma inni as'alukal-huda wat-tuqa wal-'iffata wal-qana'ata) And the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: Verily, it is a supplication through which one gets his sustenance.
