Dua of Gratitude for Strength Against Temptation

Gratitude
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2739

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the destruction of Your blessings, the change of Your protection, the suddenness of Your vengeance, and all of Your displeasure.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min zawali ni'matik, wa tahawwuli 'afiyatik, wa faja'ati niqmatik, wa jami'i sukhdik.

When to Read

This dua is powerful to recite regularly, especially when feeling tested or aware of potential pitfalls. Make it a part of your morning and evening remembrance (Adhkar) to fortify yourself against succumbing to temptation. It's also a wise supplication to utter before facing a situation where you anticipate difficulty in resisting.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a humble heart, recognizing that true strength against temptation comes only from Allah. Raise your hands in supplication as the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us for seeking refuge. Understand that seeking refuge is an active plea, not just a passive wish; it requires conscious effort on your part to avoid the temptation once you've sought Allah's protection.

Virtues & Benefits

This profound dua encompasses seeking refuge from various forms of loss and displeasure, directly addressing the root of weakness against temptation – the potential loss of Allah's favor and protection. By seeking refuge in Allah's perfect attributes (His power, His mercy), we acknowledge our own limitations and His boundless ability to safeguard us. It cultivates a deep sense of reliance on Allah (Tawakkul) and fosters gratitude for His continuous protection, which is a blessing in itself. Resisting temptation keeps our hearts pure and our actions aligned with Allah's pleasure, leading to greater peace and success in this life and the next.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated that Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to teach his companions to seek refuge in Allah from four things, saying: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min 'adhabi Jahannam, wa min 'adhabi al-Qabr, wa min fitnatil-mahya wal-maamat, wa min sharri fitnatil-masihid-Dajjal.' (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of Hellfire, from the punishment of the grave, from the trials of life and death, and from the evil of the trial of the False Messiah [Ad-Dajjal]). And it was narrated from him (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min zawali ni'matik, wa tahawwuli 'afiyatik, wa faja'ati niqmatik, wa jami'i sukhdik.' (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the destruction of Your blessings, the change of Your protection, the suddenness of Your vengeance, and all of Your displeasure).
