Dua for Sincerity and Authenticity in Character

Good Character
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2721

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ الْهُدَى وَالتُّقَى وَالْعَفَافَ وَالْغِنَى

O Allah, I ask You for guidance, piety, chastity, and self-sufficiency (contentment).

Allahumma inni as'alukal-huda wat-tuqa wal-'afafa wal-ghina

When to Read

This is a profound supplication that can be made at any time, but it is particularly potent when recited after the obligatory prayers (Salat). It's also excellent to make during the last third of the night, or during the blessed days of Dhul Hijjah. Whenever you feel the need to strengthen your inner resolve and align your actions with your intentions, this dua is perfect.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and deep reflection on its meaning. Visualize yourself embodying these qualities: guided by Allah, conscious of Him in all situations, pure in your intentions and actions, and content with what Allah has provided. Raise your hands as you would in any other dua. It's beautiful to repeat it three times, as was the practice of the Prophet ﷺ.

Virtues & Benefits

Seeking these four qualities from Allah is a comprehensive way to ensure a life of integrity and purpose. * **Guidance (Al-Huda):** This isn't just about knowing the right path, but being enabled to walk it consistently. It protects us from straying into misguidance. * **Piety (At-Tuqa):** This means having a deep consciousness of Allah, leading to avoiding His prohibitions and fulfilling His commands. It's the inner shield that guards against sin. * **Chastity ('Afaf):** This encompasses purity in all aspects – avoiding forbidden things, whether in speech, sight, or action. It's about maintaining dignity and honor. * **Self-sufficiency (Al-Ghina):** This refers to contentment and inner richness, not necessarily wealth. It’s the state of being satisfied with Allah’s decree and not being excessively driven by worldly desires, which often leads to compromise and inauthenticity. By asking for these, we are essentially asking Allah to purify our hearts and actions, ensuring our character is a true reflection of our faith.

Source & Authentication

Narrated Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him): The Prophet (peace be upon him) used to supplicate: > **Arabic:** اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ الْهُدَى وَالتُّقَى وَالْعَفَافَ وَالْغِنَى > **Translation:** "O Allah, I ask You for guidance, piety, chastity, and self-sufficiency." > > He (peace be upon him) also narrated: It is not (appropriate) for any person to say: 'O Allah, forgive me if You wish, O Allah, bestow mercy upon me if You wish.' He should ask for His favors with all His desires, for there is no one to compel Allah. — Sahih Muslim 2721
