Good Character
Hasan HadithSunan At-Tirmidhi 1890

O Allah, I ask You for doing good deeds, abandoning evil deeds, and loving the poor. I ask You to forgive me and have mercy on me. And if You intend to test Your servants with tribulation, then take me to Yourself without being tested.

Allahumma inni as'aluka fi'l al-khairat, wa tark al-munkarat, wa hubb al-masakin, wa an taghfir li wa tarhamani, wa idha aradta bi 'ibadika fitnatan fa tawaffani ilayka ghayra maftun.

Virtues & Benefits

This powerful supplication encompasses seeking Allah's help in performing good deeds (which leads to His pleasure) and avoiding sins and wrongful acts. It also asks for a compassionate heart towards the less fortunate, a hallmark of good character. Most importantly, it includes a profound request to be protected from the trials and tribulations that Allah may send upon humanity, asking for a dignified end before such tests befall us. It's a request for both worldly guidance and spiritual safety.

Source & Authentication

The narration states that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ visited a man who was gravely ill. He (the Prophet) said to him, 'O Allah, cure him, heal him, grant him strength.' He (the Prophet) then said: 'O Allah, grant him death in Your [command].' So the man said: 'O Allah, I ask You for that.' The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Indeed, when Allah takes His servant in death, He does not leave him to be afflicted by the trial [of death].' Then the Prophet ﷺ recited: 'Allahumma inni as'aluka fi'l al-khairat, wa tark al-munkarat, wa hubb al-masakin, wa an taghfir li wa tarhamani, wa idha aradta bi 'ibadika fitnatan fa tawaffani ilayka ghayra maftun.' (O Allah, I ask You for doing good deeds, abandoning evil deeds, and loving the poor. I ask You to forgive me and have mercy on me. And if You intend to test Your servants with tribulation, then take me to Yourself without being tested.)
