Good Character
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2721

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ الْهُدَى وَالتُّقَى وَالْعَفَافَ وَالْغِنَى.

O Allah, I ask You for guidance, piety, chastity, and richness (contentment).

Allahumma inni as'alukal-huda wat-tuqa wal-'afafa wal-ghina.

When to Read

This is a powerful comprehensive dua for daily supplication, especially when you feel your heart inclining towards excessive desire for worldly things, or when you're struggling with feelings of envy or discontent. It's fitting to recite it after every obligatory prayer, or at any time you feel the need to purify your intentions and seek Allah's help in managing your desires.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and conviction, raising your hands as you do when making dua. Visualize yourself embodying the qualities you are asking for: guidance leading you to what is right, piety protecting you from sin, chastity keeping you pure, and contentment making you feel wealthy regardless of material possessions. Reflect on the meaning of each word as you utter it, internalizing the request for Allah's assistance in overcoming greed.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua directly addresses the root of greed and materialism by asking Allah for fundamental spiritual and emotional qualities. Seeking guidance (huda) ensures our desires are directed towards what is pleasing to Allah. Piety (tuqa) acts as a shield against unlawful or excessive pursuit of wealth. Chastity ('afaf) implies purity in all matters, including financial dealings and desires. Most importantly, asking for richness (ghina) here refers to the richness of the heart – contentment, which the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ described as an inexhaustible treasure. 'The rich (true rich) is not the one who is abundant in property and goods, but the one who is content with himself.' (Sahih al-Bukhari 6446). True wealth is found in a satisfied heart, free from the constant craving for more.
