Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2708

سُبْحَانَكَ اللَّهُمَّ وَبِحَمْدِكَ، تَبَارَكَ اسْمُكَ، وَتَعَالَى جَدُّكَ، وَلاَ إِلَهَ غَيْرُكَ.

Glory be to You, O Allah, and praise be to You. Blessed is Your Name, and exalted is Your Majesty. And there is no god but You.

Subhanakallahumma wa bihamdika, tabaraka ismuka, wa ta'ala jadduka, wa la ilaha ghayruk.

When to Read

This beautiful dua is recited by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ at the very beginning of his prayers (Salat). It serves as an opening glorification of Allah before reciting Surah Al-Fatihah. It’s a powerful way to set the tone for your worship, reminding yourself and Allah of His supreme perfection and uniqueness. You can also recite it at any time you wish to praise and glorify Allah, perhaps after finishing a task, or as a regular part of your dhikr (remembrance of Allah).

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and presence of heart. As it's a prayer opening, it's meant to be said silently after you've said the initial 'Allahu Akbar' and before you begin your recitation of the Quran. Focus on the meaning of each phrase: acknowledging Allah's absolute purity, His abundant praise, the blessedness of His name, the loftiness of His status, and the singular reality of His divinity. It's an act of humility and recognition of our place before the Creator.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encapsulates profound praise and recognition of Allah's glory. By starting Salah with it, the Prophet ﷺ taught us the importance of beginning our worship with a deep acknowledgment of who Allah is. It purifies our intention and elevates our focus. The Hadith states that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ would recite this dua between the Takbir (saying 'Allahu Akbar') and the recitation of the Quran (Al-Fatihah) in his prayers. This establishes it as a Sunnah practice of immense spiritual significance.
