Dua for Maintaining Good Relations with Neighbors

Good Character
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2705

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the cessation of Your blessings, the change of Your protection, the suddenness of Your punishment, and all that You decree. And I seek refuge in You from the hardships of trials, the attainment of wretchedness, the evil of fate, and the rejoicing of enemies.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min zawali ni'matik, wa tahawwuli 'afiyatik, wa fuj'ati niqmatik, wa jami'i sakhatik, wa a'udhu bika min jahdil-bala'i, wa darakish-shaqa'i, wa su'il-qada'i, wa shamatatil-a'da'.

When to Read

This dua is comprehensive and can be recited at any time, especially in the morning and evening as taught by the Prophet ﷺ. It's particularly relevant when we are concerned about the well-being of our community and our relationships within it, including with our neighbors. Reciting it can be a way to protect ourselves and our surroundings from all forms of harm, both seen and unseen, thereby fostering a peaceful environment conducive to good neighborly relations.

How to Read

This supplication should be made with sincerity and a clear intention. Raise your hands as you would for other duas. Utter the words with conviction, reflecting on their meaning and asking Allah for His protection and well-being. It's beneficial to reflect on the concept of 'jahdil-bala' (hardships of trials) and how good neighborly relations are a shield against many of these hardships.

Virtues & Benefits

While this specific dua doesn't directly mention neighbors, its comprehensive nature covers seeking refuge from various evils that could negatively impact community harmony. By seeking protection from the 'cessation of blessings' and 'change of protection,' we ask Allah to maintain the good state of affairs we enjoy, which includes peaceful coexistence with those around us. Protection from 'hardships of trials' and 'evil of fate' can prevent personal misfortunes that might strain neighborly bonds. Furthermore, seeking refuge from 'all that You decree' and 'rejoicing of enemies' helps ensure that our lives and the lives of our community members are protected from discord and strife, fostering an atmosphere where good neighborly relations can thrive.
