Good Character
Hasan HadithSunan At-Tirmidhi 3237

O Allah, I ask You for Your love, and the love of those who love You, and for the deeds which will help me attain Your love. O Allah, make Your love dearer to me than myself, and my family, and than cold water.

Allahumma inni as'aluka hubbaka, wa hubba man yuhibbuk, wal-'amala alladhi yuballighuni hubbak.

This implies that by asking for Allah's love, our actions and thoughts will naturally gravitate towards pleasing Him. Furthermore, cultivating love for Allah and His Messenger ﷺ is a key component of having good character and a strong faith, as the Prophet ﷺ stated: 'None of you truly believes until I am more beloved to him than his father, his child, and all the people.' (Sahih al-Bukhari 15; Sahih Muslim 44).

Narrated Abdullah ibn Hisham: We were with the Prophet ﷺ and he took the hand of Umar and said, 'By Allah, you are dearer to me than everything.' Then Umar said, 'By Allah, you are dearer to me than everything except my own self.' The Prophet ﷺ said, 'No, by Allah, not until I am dearer to you than yourself.' Then Umar said, 'Now, by Allah, you are dearer to me than myself.' The Prophet ﷺ said, 'Now you have got it right, O Umar.'
