O Allah, let me live as a poor person, let me die as a poor person, and gather me among the poor on the Day of Resurrection.
Allahumma ahyini miskinan wa amitni miskinan wahshurni fi zumratil-masakin yawmal-qiyamah
When to Read
This profound dua is best recited when reflecting on the true nature of worldly possessions and status. It can be particularly meaningful after observing acts of charity, or when feeling any inclination towards arrogance or self-importance. Reciting it in the quiet moments of the night, or after salah, can enhance its sincerity.
How to Read
Recite this dua with a sincere heart, focusing on the desire for spiritual richness over material wealth. Understand that 'miskin' here signifies spiritual poverty before Allah, a complete reliance on Him, and a detachment from the ego that can lead to pride. It's about embodying humility in one's state of being, not necessarily literal destitution.
Virtues & Benefits
This dua embodies the essence of humility, a cornerstone of good character in Islam. By asking to live and die in a state of 'miskin' (spiritual need and reliance on Allah), one seeks freedom from the spiritual diseases of arrogance and vanity. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us that those who are truly humble are those who are closest to Allah. True nobility lies not in high status or wealth, but in a heart that is constantly aware of its dependence on its Creator and dedicated to serving His creation without seeking recognition.
