Dua for Genuine Humility and Rejecting Self-Conceit

Good Character
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2710

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the declining of Your blessings, the changing of Your protection, the suddenness of Your punishment, and all that displeases You. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from distress and sorrow, from incapacity and laziness, from cowardice and stinginess, and from the overwhelming of debt and the subjugation of men.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min zawali ni'matik, wa tahawwuli 'afiyatik, wa faja'ati niqmatik, wa jami'i sakhatik. Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazan, wa a'udhu bika minal-'ajzi wal-kasal, wa a'udhu bika minal-jubni wal-buhl, wa a'udhu bika min ghalabatid-dayni wa qahrir-rijal.

When to Read

This comprehensive dua is excellent to recite regularly, especially in the morning and evening. It's particularly beneficial when you feel a sense of pride or self-importance creeping in, or when facing challenges that might make you feel overwhelmed. It's also a good practice to make it part of your daily supplications for overall protection and sound character.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a heartfelt understanding of its meaning. Imagine yourself genuinely asking Allah for protection. Raising your hands slightly, as was the practice of the Prophet ﷺ, can enhance the feeling of supplication. Focus on seeking Allah's refuge, acknowledging that true strength and well-being come only from Him.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua offers profound protection against the loss of Allah's favors, a decline in health, and His displeasure. Crucially for our topic, by seeking refuge from overwhelming debt and the subjugation of men, we are indirectly seeking freedom from situations that can inflate the ego. True humility stems from recognizing our dependence on Allah and our vulnerability. This dua fosters that dependence, reminding us that our achievements and status are entirely from Him, thus deterring self-conceit. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us this comprehensive supplication to safeguard against many worldly and spiritual ills, including those that feed arrogance.

Source & Authentication

‘Abdullah bin ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported that this was a supplication the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to often say: "O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the declining of Your blessings, the changing of Your protection, the suddenness of Your punishment, and all that displeases You. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from distress and sorrow, from incapacity and laziness, from cowardice and stinginess, and from the overwhelming of debt and the subjugation of men."
