O Allah, I ask You for the doing of good deeds, the abandoning of evil deeds, the love of the poor, and that You forgive me and have mercy on me. And if You intend a trial for a people, then take my soul without being afflicted by it. I ask You for Your love, the love of those who love You, and the love of deeds that bring me closer to Your love.

Allahumma inni as'aluka fi'lal-khayrati wa tarkal-munkarati, wa hubbal-masakini, wa an taghfira li wa tarhamani, wa idha aradta bi-qawmin fitnatan fatawaffani ghayra maftunin, wa as'aluka hubbak, wa hubba man yuhibbuk, wa hubba 'amalin yuqarribuni ila hubbik.

When to Read

This is a profound and comprehensive dua, suitable for recitation at any time. It's particularly powerful during personal supplications (dua) in prayer (Salah), especially in the prostration (sujood), after the final Tashahhud before Taslim, during the last third of the night (Qiyam al-Layl), or whenever you feel the need to seek Allah's guidance and mercy in your daily life and actions. It can also be recited as part of your daily remembrance (adhkar) to reinforce your intentions for good.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincere reflection on its deep meanings. As you utter each phrase, pause and internalize the request: truly desiring to perform good deeds, to consciously avoid wrongdoings, to cultivate genuine love and compassion for the less fortunate, to seek Allah's profound forgiveness and mercy, to wish for a virtuous end to life, and above all, to yearn for Allah's love, the love of His beloved ones, and the love of actions that draw you nearer to Him. Understanding and feeling the weight of these requests will enhance the dua's impact and your connection with Allah.

Virtues & Benefits

The benefits of this dua are immense, touching upon the core aspirations of a believer. By asking for the 'doing of good deeds' and 'abandoning of evil,' we seek Allah's help in living a righteous life. The 'love of the poor' highlights the importance of compassion and social responsibility, which are hallmarks of noble character. The request for 'forgiveness and mercy' addresses our human shortcomings. Most importantly, the supplication for 'Your love, the love of those who love You, and the love of deeds that bring me closer to Your love' is a request for the ultimate success. When Allah loves a person, He makes them beloved by the inhabitants of the heavens and the earth (Sahih al-Bukhari 7485). This dua directly seeks the means to achieve that divine love, implicitly asking for Allah's acceptance of our actions and character, leading to immense spiritual rewards and a blessed existence.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet ﷺ said: (Allah said to him in a vision) 'Ask.' I said: 'O Allah, I ask You for the doing of good deeds, the abandoning of evil deeds, the love of the poor, and that You forgive me and have mercy on me. And if You intend a trial for a people, then take my soul without being afflicted by it. I ask You for Your love, the love of those who love You, and the love of deeds that bring me closer to Your love.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'It is true, by Allah, so study it and learn it.'
