Dua for Empathy and Understanding Others' Feelings

Good Character
QuranQuran 14:40

رَبِّ اجْعَلْنِي مُقِيمَ الصَّلَاةِ وَمِن ذُرِّيَّتِي ۚ رَبَّنَا وَتَقَبَّلْ دُعَاءِ

My Lord, establish prayer for me and my descendants. Our Lord, and accept my supplication.

Rabbi ij'alni muqim as-salati wa min dhurriyyati, rabbana wa taqabbal du'a

When to Read

This is a foundational supplication for character development. You can recite it any time, especially after your obligatory prayers. Consider making it a regular part of your daily duas when you are reflecting on your interactions with others, or when you find yourself struggling to connect with someone's perspective. It’s a prayer for a righteous lineage and acceptance, encompassing the desire for good character within ourselves and our families.

How to Read

Recite this with sincere intention, focusing on the meaning of seeking Allah's help to establish prayer, which is a pillar of faith and a source of connection to Him. The latter part, 'Our Lord, and accept my supplication,' is a plea for Allah to accept not just this specific dua but all our earnest prayers for self-improvement and the well-being of others. Imagine the strength and connection you gain from prayer radiating outwards, enabling you to better understand those around you.

Virtues & Benefits

While this specific ayah is a prayer for establishing prayer and seeking its acceptance, the very act of praying connects us to Allah, the source of all wisdom and compassion. Through prayer, we can cultivate inner peace and a more reflective heart, which are essential for developing empathy. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us: 'The believer is the mirror of his brother' (Abu Dawud 4918, Sahih). When we are connected to Allah, we are better able to reflect His qualities, including compassion and understanding, towards His creation. Seeking Allah's help through dua is a powerful means of softening our hearts and aligning our character with Islamic teachings.
