Dua for Developing a Spirit of Forgiveness

Good Character
Hasan HadithSunan An-Nasa'i 1305

O Allah, I ask You for a sound heart, and I ask You for contentment after destiny has decreed, and I ask You for a pleasant life after death, and I ask You for the delight of looking at Your Face, and the longing to meet You, without any distressing hardship or misleading trial. O Allah, adorn us with the adornment of faith, and make us guided and guiding.

Allahumma inni as'aluka qalbansaleeman, wa as'alukar-rida ba'dal-qadaa', wa as'aluka barda al-'ayshi ba'dal-mawt, wa as'aluka ladhdhat-an-nazari ila wajhik, wash-shawqa ila liqaa'ik, fi ghayri dharraa'in mudirrah, wa la fitnatin mudillah. Allahumma zayyinna bizinatil-iman, waj'alna hudatan muhtadeen.

When to Read

This is a comprehensive dua that can be recited at any time, particularly after obligatory prayers or during personal supplications. It's especially relevant when seeking inner peace, acceptance of life's challenges, and a willingness to forgive, as it encompasses a 'sound heart' (qalb saleem) which is the foundation for such noble qualities.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and reflection. Raise your hands as you would during supplication. Focus on the meaning of each phrase, visualizing the qualities you are asking Allah for. The 'sound heart' implies purity from malice, resentment, and a strong capacity for empathy and forgiveness.

Virtues & Benefits

While this specific dua doesn't explicitly mention the 'benefits of forgiveness' directly, its request for a 'sound heart' (qalb saleem) is intrinsically linked to it. A sound heart is one that is free from envy, hatred, and grudges, making forgiveness a natural outflow. A heart free from these ailments leads to immense peace of mind and closeness to Allah. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: "The believers in their mutual kindness, compassion, and sympathy are like one body; if one of the eyes complains, the whole body responds with sleeplessness and fever." (Sahih al-Bukhari 6011, Sahih Muslim 2586). Forgiveness is a key component of this brotherly love and compassion.

Source & Authentication

Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to supplicate: "Allahumma inni as'aluka qalbansaleeman, wa as'alukar-rida ba'dal-qadaa', wa as'aluka barda al-'ayshi ba'dal-mawt, wa as'aluka ladhdhat-an-nazari ila wajhik, wash-shawqa ila liqaa'ik, fi ghayri dharraa'in mudirrah, wa la fitnatin mudillah. Allahumma zayyinna bizinatil-iman, waj'alna hudatan muhtadeen." (Sunan An-Nasa'i 1305). The hadith has been authenticated as Hasan by some scholars.
