O Allah, guide me to the best of character, for no one can guide to the best of it except You. And turn me away from bad character, for no one can turn away from bad character except You.
Allahumma ihdini li-ahsani al-akhlaq, la yahdi li-ahsaniha illa Anta, wasrif 'anni sayyi'aha, la yasrifu 'anni sayyi'aha illa Anta.
When to Read
This dua is profoundly beneficial to recite daily, particularly after your obligatory prayers (Salah). It's a moment of sincere supplication when your heart is receptive. You can also make it part of your morning or evening remembrance (dhikr), asking Allah to shape your character throughout the day and night.
How to Read
Recite this dua with sincere intention and a humble heart, raising your hands as you would during supplication after Salah. Focus on the meaning of the words, truly asking Allah to transform your inner disposition and outward actions. It's best to say it in Arabic, but if you struggle with pronunciation, focus on getting the meaning across in your own language while striving to learn the Arabic. Consistency is key.
Virtues & Benefits
Developing a kind and gentle nature is a cornerstone of a Muslim's character, reflecting the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. This dua directly addresses this need. The Prophet ﷺ himself was the embodiment of excellent character, and asking Allah for guidance to the best of character is asking to emulate him. Such a disposition draws people towards Islam and earns Allah's pleasure. The Prophet ﷺ said: 'The best among you are those who have the best character.' (Sahih al-Bukhari 3559, Sahih Muslim 2321). A gentle nature fosters stronger relationships, reduces conflict, and brings peace to oneself and others.
