O Allah, grant my soul its righteousness, and purify it, for You are the best to purify it. You are its Guardian and its Master. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from knowledge that does not benefit, from a heart that is not humbled, from a soul that is not satisfied, and from a supplication that is not answered.
Allahumma ati nafsi taqwaha, wa zakkaha anta khayru man zakkaha, anta waliyyuha wa mawlaha. Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min 'ilmin la yanfa', wa min qalbin la yakhsha', wa min nafsin la tashba', wa min du'a'in la yusma'
When to Read
This is a profound supplication that can be recited at any time, especially after obligatory prayers. It is particularly beneficial when you feel your desires overwhelming your resolve, or when struggling with impulses that lead you away from righteousness. Making it a regular part of your morning or evening routine can build a continuous shield of divine protection and inner strength.
How to Read
Recite this dua with sincere intention and a humble heart. Focus on the meaning of each phrase, acknowledging your reliance on Allah for inner strength. Raise your hands in supplication as you might during other duas, demonstrating your earnest plea. Reflect on the specific struggles you face with your nafs (self) as you utter each part of the dua, asking Allah to address those particular weaknesses.
Virtues & Benefits
This dua directly addresses the core of self-discipline and spiritual growth. Seeking Allah's help to give the nafs its taqwa (consciousness of Allah) and purify it is the most effective way to gain control over our desires and negative inclinations. The latter part of the dua seeks refuge from four detrimental things: knowledge without benefit (which can lead to arrogance), a heart that is not humbled (lacking awe and submission to Allah), a soul that is never satisfied (constantly chasing worldly desires), and unanswered supplications (which can stem from various reasons, including a lack of sincerity or a nafs that is not in order). By seeking refuge from these, we are actively working towards a balanced, disciplined, and spiritually connected life.
