Dua for Cultivating Responsibility and Accountability

Good Character
Sahih HadithSunan An-Nasa'i 3104

O Allah, I ask You to enable me to do good deeds, and to abandon evil deeds, and to love the poor. And I ask You to forgive me and have mercy on me. And if You intend to try Your creation with a trial, then take me to Yourself without being tried. And I ask You for Your love, and the love of those who love You, and the love of deeds which bring me closer to Your love.

Allahumma inni as'aluka fi'lal khayrat, wa tarkal munkarat, wa hubbal masakin, wa an taghfira li wa tarhamani, wa idha aradta fi khalqika fitnatan fa tawaffani ilayha ghayra maftun, wa as'aluka hubbak, wa hubba man yuhibbuk, wa hubba 'amalin yuqarribbu ila hubbik.

Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) used to teach us the following words in the Tashahhud of the prayer: 'Allahumma inni as'aluka al-'adhab bi jahannama, wa as'aluk al-'adhab fil qabr. Allahumma inni as'aluka min khayri ma sa'aluka 'ibaduka al-salihun, wa a'udhu bika min sharri ma 'aadhu 'ibaduk al-salihun. Allahumma inni as'aluka al-jannata wa na'imah, wa a'udhu bika min an-nari wa 'adhabiha. Allahumma inni as'aluka fi'lal khayrat, wa tarkal munkarat, wa hubbal masakin, wa an taghfira li wa tarhamani, wa idha aradta fi khalqika fitnatan fa tawaffani ilayha ghayra maftun, wa as'aluka hubbak, wa hubba man yuhibbuk, wa hubba 'amalin yuqarribbu ila hubbik.' Then he narrated a Hadith with a similar meaning, adding: 'and I ask You for the best of what Your righteous slaves ask for, and I seek refuge in You from the worst of what Your righteous slaves seek refuge from.' He mentioned the same in the prayer, as narrated in the Hadith of Ibn Mas'ud. And he mentioned in the prayer: 'O Allah, I ask You for Paradise and its delights, and I seek refuge in You from the Hell-fire and its torments.'
