Good Character
Hasan HadithSunan Ibn Majah 3802

O Allah, make me very grateful, and make me dislike boredom, and make me commit few sins, and make me small in my own eyes, and great in the eyes of people.

Allahumma ij'alni shakooran, waj'alni qaleela al-malali, waj'alni qaleela al-ma'siyati, waj'alni fi 'ayni sagheeran wa fi a'yunin-nasi kabeeran.

Virtues & Benefits

This beautiful dua is a powerful tool for self-improvement and strengthening our character, which directly impacts our relationships. * **Cultivating Gratitude:** 'Make me very grateful' (اجْعَلْنِيْ شَكُوْرًا) is the cornerstone of appreciating Allah's blessings, which includes the people He has placed in our lives. Gratitude is a key to contentment and a vital element in healthy relationships. * **Avoiding Idleness & Sin:** Disliking boredom and sin (وَاجْعَلْنِيْ قَلِيْلَ الْمَلَالِ، وَاجْعَلْنِيْ قَلِيْلَ الْمَعْصِيَةِ) helps us stay productive and righteous, preventing us from falling into habits that can harm ourselves and our interactions with others. * **Humility & True Standing:** 'Make me small in my own eyes, and great in the eyes of people' (وَاجْعَلْنِيْ فِيْ عَيْنِيْ صَغِيْرًا وَفِيْ أَعْيُنِ النَّاسِ كَبِيْرًا) is a profound request. True humility before Allah (being small in one's own eyes) is what leads to genuine respect and a good reputation among creation, fostering stronger, more sincere relationships.

Narrated Abdullah ibn Mas'ud: He said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) taught me a comprehensive supplication, saying: 'Say: O Allah, I ask You for the guidance, piety, chastity, and richness (self-sufficiency). And another supplication: O Allah, forgive me my sins, the old and the new, the secret and the open, the excessive and the little. And another supplication: O Allah, grant me a strong fear of You, enough to put a barrier between me and disobedience to You; and grant me obedience to You, enough to bring me to Your Paradise; and grant me a firm conviction, enough to make the afflictions of this world easy for me; and grant me enjoyment of my hearing, my sight, and my strength as long as You keep me alive, and make it my inheritor; and make my vengeance fall upon those who wronged me, and support me against those who are my enemies; and do not let my affliction be in my religion; and do not let this world be my greatest concern, nor the limit of my knowledge; and do not let me rule over anyone who punishes me. And another supplication: O Allah, grant me a grateful heart, and a remembering tongue, and a healthy body, and make my affairs turn out for the best. I seek refuge in You from the evil of my<bos>. And another supplication: O Allah, make me very grateful, and make me dislike boredom, and make me commit few sins, and make me small in my own eyes, and great in the eyes of people. And another supplication: O Allah, help me to remember You, to give You thanks, and to worship You well. (He said:) This is the best of what the slaves can ask for.' — Sunan Ibn Majah 3802.
