Dua for Cultivating Contentment and Gratitude for Allah's Blessings

Good Character
Hasan HadithSunan At-Tirmidhi 3510

O Allah, grant me contentment with what You have provided me, and rectify for me what remains of me, and have mercy on me with Your mercy, O Most Merciful of the merciful.

Allahumma-rzuqni qana'atan bima razaqtani, wa aslih li ma baqiya minni, warhamni bi rahmatik ya Arhamar-rahimin.

When to Read

This dua is perfect for reciting daily, especially in the morning after Fajr prayer or in the evening. It's also incredibly beneficial to say whenever you feel the sting of envy or the weight of dissatisfaction with your circumstances. Making it a habit can help shift your perspective throughout the day.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a present heart. Focus on the meaning of each phrase: asking Allah for the ability to be satisfied with His decree, seeking His help to improve your character and actions, and humbly requesting His vast mercy. Visualize yourself feeling a sense of peace and appreciation for what you have.

Virtues & Benefits

This powerful supplication directly addresses two vital aspects of a believer's life: contentment (qana'ah) and seeking Allah's rectification and mercy. Contentment is a key characteristic of the righteous, as the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 'Indeed, whoever is content with what Allah has decreed for him, he is the richest of people.' (Sunan At-Tirmidhi 2305, Sahih). Asking Allah to rectify what remains means seeking His help to improve our character, our actions, and our remaining lifespan, ensuring it's spent in His obedience. The plea for His mercy acknowledges our constant need for His forgiveness and grace.

Source & Authentication

The hadith is narrated as part of a longer supplication. When asked by a man what the best way to ask Allah was, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 'Ask Allah for 'afiyah' (well-being) in this life and the hereafter. Then he said: 'O Allah, grant me contentment with what You have provided me, and rectify for me what remains of me, and have mercy on me with Your mercy, O Most Merciful of the merciful.' (Sunan At-Tirmidhi 3510). The narrator, Abdullah ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), said that the Prophet ﷺ used to teach this dua to his Companions as they would teach them a Surah of the Quran.
