Dua for a Humble and Submissive Heart (Khushu)

Good Character
Hasan HadithSunan At-Tirmidhi 3538

O Allah, I ask You for a heart that is humble and fearful (khashi'), a tongue that remembers (You), a heart that is pious, and I seek refuge in You from these four. And I seek refuge in You from the immorality of the tongue, and the heart, and immorality itself, and from the evil of hearing and sight, and from the evil of a drop (of seed), and from the evil of my heart.

Allahumma inni as'aluka qalban khashi'an, wa lisanan dhakiran, wa qalban taqiyyan, wa a'udhu bika min ha'ula'i al-arba', wa a'udhu bika min fujuril-lisani, wal-qalbi, wal-fujur, wa min sharri sam'i wal-basari, wa min sharri nutfatin wa min sharri qalbi.

When to Read

This powerful supplication is suitable for recitation at any time, but it is particularly beneficial to make it a regular part of your morning and evening remembrance (adhkar). You can also recite it during the blessed times, such as the last third of the night or between the Adhan and Iqamah, when duas are more likely to be accepted.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and focus, envisioning your heart becoming more receptive to Allah's commands and blessings. Understand the meaning behind each request. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us this dua to seek protection from negative traits and to cultivate positive qualities. It's best recited with hands raised, as is the custom when making sincere supplication.

Virtues & Benefits

Developing a humble and submissive heart (khushu') is central to experiencing the sweetness of faith (iman) and truly benefiting from acts of worship. It allows us to connect with Allah on a deeper level, making prayer (salah) and recitation of the Quran more meaningful. This dua helps us seek refuge from internal evils like ill intentions and immorality, while simultaneously asking for the best qualities: a humble, remembering, and pious heart. Cultivating these inner states is a continuous journey towards pleasing Allah.

Narrated Abdullah bin Mas'ud: The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to supplicate: 'Allahumma inni as'aluka al-huda wat-tuqa wal-'afafa wal-ghina. (O Allah, I ask You for guidance, piety, chastity, and richness/contentment.)' And he would seek refuge in Allah from the evil of the day and the evil of the night. He also used to supplicate: 'Allahumma inni as'aluka qalb-an khashi'an, wa lisanan dhakiran, wa qalban taqiyyan, wa a'udhu bika min ha'ula'i al-arba', wa a'udhu bika min fujuril-lisani, wal-qalbi, wal-fujur, wa min sharri sam'i wal-basari, wa min sharri nutfatin wa min sharri qalbi.' (O Allah, I ask You for a humble heart, a remembering tongue, a pious heart, and I seek refuge in You from these four. And I seek refuge in You from the immorality of the tongue, and the heart, and immorality itself, and from the evil of hearing and sight, and from the evil of a drop (of seed), and from the evil of my heart.) — Sunan At-Tirmidhi 3538. (Note: The first part of the hadith is also found in Sahih Muslim 2721, emphasizing the importance of seeking guidance and piety. This specific dua concerning the humble heart is found in Tirmidhi).
