Dua for a Gentle Heart and Avoiding Harshness

Good Character
Hasan HadithJami` at-Tirmidhi 3546

O Allah, I ask You for a sound heart and a truthful tongue, and I seek refuge in You from the evil of what You know. And I ask You for the good of what You know, and I seek Your forgiveness for what You know.

Allahumma inni as'aluka qalban saleeman, wa lisaanan saadiqan, wa a'udhu bika min sharri ma ta'lam, wa as'aluka khayra ma ta'lam, wa astaghfiruka mimma ta'lam.

When to Read

This is a beautiful dua to make during the day, particularly after prayers or when reflecting on your character. It's especially fitting when you feel a stir of impatience or harshness within yourself, or when interacting with others, to ask Allah to soften your heart and tongue.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and focus. Imagine your heart being purified and your words becoming gentle and truthful as you ask Allah. Raising your hands slightly can be a sign of supplication, but the core is the sincerity of your heart. Remember that duas are most potent when they align with our actions, so follow this prayer by consciously trying to speak kindly and act with compassion.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is comprehensive. Asking for a 'sound heart' (qalban saleeman) means a heart free from malice, envy, and ill-will – a heart that is pure and at peace. A truthful tongue ensures our words are honest and constructive. Seeking refuge from 'evil of what You know' and asking for 'good of what You know' encompasses all aspects of life, acknowledging Allah's complete knowledge and power. It's a complete submission and reliance on Him to refine our inner and outer selves, leading to better character and stronger relationships.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from 'Abdullah that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to say: 'Allahumma inni as'aluka al-huda wat-tuqa wal-'afafa wal-ghina.' (O Allah, I ask You for guidance, piety, chastity, and self-sufficiency). And he used to say: 'Allahumma inni as'aluka qalban saleeman, wa lisaanan saadiqan, wa a'udhu bika min sharri ma ta'lam, wa as'aluka khayra ma ta'lam, wa astaghfiruka mimma ta'lam.' (O Allah, I ask You for a sound heart and a truthful tongue, and I seek refuge in You from the evil of what You know. And I ask You for the good of what You know, and I seek Your forgiveness for what You know).
