Dua for a Balanced and Moderate Nature

Good Character
Sahih HadithSunan An-Nasa'i 1304

O Allah, I ask You for steadfastness in all matters, and determination in pursuing guidance. I ask You to enable me to be grateful for Your favors and to worship You in the best manner. I ask You for a sound heart and a truthful tongue. I seek refuge in You from the evil of what You know, and I ask You for the good of what You know, and I seek Your forgiveness for what You know.

Allahumma inni as'alukal-thabat fil-amr, wal-'azeemata 'alar-rushd, wa as'aluka shukra ni'matik, wa husna 'ibadatik, wa as'aluka qalban saleeman, wa lisanaan sadiqan, wa a'udhu bika min sharri ma ta'lam, wa as'aluka min khairi ma ta'lam, wa astaghfiruka mimma ta'lam.

When to Read

This comprehensive dua is excellent to recite daily, especially in the morning and evening. It’s particularly fitting when facing decisions, moments of temptation, or times when one feels swayed by extremes in their thoughts or actions. Making it a habit helps cultivate a consistent disposition of balance.

How to Read

Recite with sincerity and focus, imagining Allah (SWT) hearing your plea. Raise your hands slightly, as was the practice of the Prophet ﷺ when making supplication. Ensure you understand the meaning of each request as you utter it, reflecting on your own need for Allah’s help in achieving these qualities.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua directly addresses the need for inner strength and guidance, essential for a balanced life. Asking for 'steadfastness in matters' and 'determination in pursuing guidance' helps one remain firm on the straight path without wavering. The request for 'a sound heart' purifies intentions and removes malice, while a 'truthful tongue' ensures honesty in speech, both vital for good character. By seeking refuge from evil and asking for good, we place our trust entirely in Allah's knowledge and power, acknowledging our limitations.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this dua to Abdullah ibn Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) when he asked him to teach him words to say when asking for something. The Prophet ﷺ said: Allahumma inni as'alukal-thabat fil-amr, wal-'azeemata 'alar-rushd, wa as'aluka shukra ni'matik, wa husna 'ibadatik, wa as'aluka qalban saleeman, wa lisanaan sadiqan, wa a'udhu bika min sharri ma ta'lam, wa as'aluka min khairi ma ta'lam, wa astaghfiruka mimma ta'lam.
