How to Read
Recite this dua with sincerity and a deep longing for self-improvement. Visualize yourself embodying the best of characters – kindness, patience, honesty, and compassion. It is most effective when accompanied by genuine effort to implement good manners in your daily interactions. Speak directly to Allah, as if you are asking a trusted friend who has the power to change your very being. Remember that Allah loves sincerity and effort.
Virtues & Benefits
Seeking Allah's help to beautify our character is a direct path to pleasing Him and earning His pleasure. Good character (husn al-khuluq) is a heavy deed on the Day of Judgment, as the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 'There is nothing heavier in the believer's scale than good character.' (Tirmidhi 2003, Sahih). This dua acknowledges Allah's creation of our physical selves and asks Him to perfect our inner selves, reflecting the holistic perfection that Islam encourages. By asking for beautiful character, we are asking for qualities that foster strong relationships, inner peace, and a deep connection with our Creator.

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to say: > **Arabic:** اللَّهُمَّ آتِ نَفْسِي تَقْوَاهَا، وَزَكِّهَا أَنْتَ خَيْرُ مَنْ زَكَّاهَا، أَنْتَ وَلِيُّهَا وَمَولاهَا، اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ عِلْمٍ لَا يَنْفَعُ، وَمِنْ قَلْبٍ لَا يَخْشَعُ، وَمِنْ نَفْسٍ لَا تَشْبَعُ، وَمِنْ دُعَاءٍ لَا يُسْتَجَابُ لَهُ > **Translation:** 'O Allah, grant my soul its piety and purify it, for You are the best of those who purify it. You are its Guardian and its Protector. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from knowledge that does not benefit, from a heart that does not fear (You), from a soul that is not satisfied, and from a supplication that is not answered.' And he used to say: > **Arabic:** اللَّهُمَّ أَحْسِنْ عَاقِبَتَنَا فِي الأُمُورِ كُلِّهَا، وَأَجِرْنَا مِنْ خِزْيِ الدُّنْيَا وَعَذَابِ الآخِرَةِ > **Translation:** 'O Allah, make good the consequences of all our affairs and save us from the disgrace of this world and the punishment of the Hereafter.' And he used to say: > **Arabic:** اللَّهُمَّ أَحْسِنْ خُلُقِي كَمَا أَحْسَنْتَ خَلْقِي > **Translation:** 'O Allah, make my character beautiful, just as You have made my form beautiful.' — Musnad Ahmad 23949.
