Sahih HadithSunan Abi Dawud 5095

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ، تَوَكَّلْتُ عَلَى اللَّهِ، وَلاَ حَوْلَ وَلاَ قُوَّةَ إِلاَّ بِاللَّهِ

In the name of Allah, I rely on Allah, and there is no might nor power except with Allah.

Bismillahi, tawakkaltu 'alallahi, wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah

When to Read

This dua is perfect for reciting at the very beginning of any gathering where decisions are made, advice is sought, or discussions take place. Whether it's a formal business meeting, a family consultation, a community shura, or even just a discussion among friends, starting with this supplication invokes Allah's blessing and guidance.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a clear intention to seek Allah's help and avoid any reliance on one's own limited strength. It's best recited just before the first person speaks or the first agenda item is introduced, setting a tone of humility and dependence on the Almighty.

Virtues & Benefits

Reciting this dua signifies complete reliance on Allah (Tawakkul), acknowledging that all strength and power come from Him alone. It helps ward off arrogance, ensures that the proceedings are blessed, and increases the likelihood of making righteous decisions that align with Allah's will. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this dua for when one leaves their home, indicating its power in seeking divine protection and guidance in new endeavors, making it equally fitting for the commencement of any significant undertaking like a council or consultation.

Source & Authentication

Narrated by Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him): The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said, 'When a person goes out of his house and says: Bismillahi, tawakkaltu 'alallahi, wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah. (In the name of Allah, I rely on Allah, and there is no might nor power except with Allah). It will be said to him: You are guided, defended and protected.' So, the devil leaves him alone. Another devil says to him: 'How can you get to a person whom he has been guided, defended and protected by Allah?'
