Gatherings & Meetings
Hasan HadithSunan At-Tirmidhi 1925

O Allah, I ask You to enable me to do good deeds and abandon evil deeds, and to love the poor. I ask You to forgive me and have mercy on me. If You decree a trial for Your creation, take me to Yourself without subjecting me to it. I ask You for Your love, and the love of those who love You, and the love of deeds which bring me closer to Your love.

Allahumma inni as'aluka fi'la khairat, wa tarkal munkarat, wa hubbal masakin, wa an taghfira li wa tarhamani, wa idha aradta fi khalqika fitnatan fa tawaffani ilaiha ghaira maftun. As'aluka hubbaka, wa hubba man yuhibbuk, wa hubba 'amal yuqarribuni ila hubbik.

When to Read

This comprehensive dua is perfect for recitation before or during gatherings where good deeds and charitable work are being discussed or undertaken. It's particularly relevant at the start of community projects, charity drives, or any meeting aimed at collective benefit. It's also a personal invocation you can make anytime you wish to align your intentions and actions with Allah's pleasure.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a focused heart. Begin by acknowledging Allah's greatness and your dependence on Him. Raise your hands if appropriate, as is the Sunnah when making dua. Reflect on each part of the dua: asking for the ability to do good, the strength to avoid sin, compassion for the less fortunate, seeking forgiveness, and a pure intention to love Allah and draw closer to Him through beloved deeds. Make it a personal supplication, weaving in specific needs for your gathering if applicable.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encapsulates a holistic approach to seeking Allah's favor. By asking for the ability to perform good deeds and shun evil, we seek Allah's help in fulfilling our religious obligations and living a righteous life. The request for love of the poor (masakin) cultivates empathy and encourages charitable actions. Seeking forgiveness and mercy is fundamental to our relationship with Allah. The final portion, asking for His love, the love of those who love Him, and the love of actions that bring one closer to Him, is a profound spiritual aspiration that guides all our endeavors towards pleasing our Creator.

Source & Authentication

Tirmidhi narrated from Abdullah bin 'Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he said: A man asked the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him): 'Which supplication is heard best?' He said: 'The supplication of a person in his absence.' Then he said: 'The best supplication is firm belief.' Then he said: 'The best of worship is abstinence.' Then he said: 'Begin your deeds with the remembrance of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, and His praise, and say: Allahumma inni as'aluka fi'la khairat, wa tarkal munkarat, wa hubbal masakin, wa an taghfira li wa tarhamani, wa idha aradta fi khalqika fitnatan fa tawaffani ilaiha ghaira maftun. As'aluka hubbaka, wa hubba man yuhibbuk, wa hubba 'amal yuqarribuni ila hubbik.' (The wording here is from Al-Bukhari in Al-Adab Al-Mufrad, chapter 27, Hadith 725, which is similar to Tirmidhi's narration.)
