Gatherings & Meetings
Sahih HadithSunan Abi Dawud 5087

In the name of Allah, with whose name nothing on earth or in the heavens can harm, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.

Bismillahilladhi la yadurru ma'asmihi shay'un fil-ardi wa la fis-sama'i wa Huwas-Sami'ul-'Alim.

When to Read

This dua is incredibly powerful for seeking Allah's protection for yourself and others during any gathering. It's especially relevant when attending large events, conferences, weddings, or even just a casual get-together where many people are present. Recite it before entering the venue, or before the gathering officially begins, to invoke Allah's safeguarding presence.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincere intention and full conviction in Allah's power. Take a moment to reflect on the meaning of the words: recognizing that true protection comes only from Allah, the One who hears all and knows all. You can say it individually or lead others in reciting it together. It's often beneficial to raise your hands slightly while reciting, as is customary for supplication.

Virtues & Benefits

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this dua as a means of comprehensive protection. Anyone who recites it three times in the morning will not be afflicted by any calamity until evening, and anyone who recites it three times in the evening will not be afflicted by any calamity until morning. (Sunan Abi Dawud 5088). When applied to a gathering, it extends this divine shield to everyone present, warding off potential harm, illness, accidents, or any form of misfortune that might arise.

Source & Authentication

The hadith narrated by Uthman ibn Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) states: 'I heard Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) say: "He who says three times every morning: 'Bismillahilladhi la yadurru ma'asmihi shay'un fil-ardi wa la fis-sama'i wa Huwas-Sami'ul-'Alim' (In the name of Allah, with whose name nothing on earth or in the heavens can harm, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing), will not be smitten by sudden calamity until nightfall; and he who says it at nightfall will not be smitten by sudden calamity until morning.'" Sunan Abi Dawud 5087. Another narration in Sunan Abi Dawud 5088 states: 'Uthman said: 'By Allah, I did not miss it since I heard it from Allah's Messenger (ﷺ).' And Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) also narrated it and said: 'I did not miss it since I heard it from Allah's Messenger (ﷺ).'
